Sclerotherapy is an extremely safe and well-established medical procedure that involves an injection of a solution directly into the spider vein, using a very small needle. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to swell and stick together, and the blood to clot. Because the vein is no longer getting a blood supply, it scleroses, or closes down, forcing the blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed by the body tissue and eventually fades.
This procedure generally lasts approximately 30 minutes. After sclerotherapy, treated veins will fade within 4-6 weeks, although occasionally it may take longer to see full results. In some instance several sclerotherapy treatments may be necessary.
